The 4 Types of Deficiency (Which Type Are You?):

Each type of deficiency requires different changes at home to make to heal quickly. Learning what type(s) you most fall into helps you choose the most beneficial things to spend your time and energy on.

*Don’t get stuck in overthinking this, just go with you “gut” instinct*

  • Qi or Energy Deficiency
    • This is the simplest type of deficiency and the quickest to heal
    • The most common symptoms are:
      • Mild shortness of breath
      • Dry or weak cough
      • Tendency to catch colds/flu bugs
      • Poor appetite
      • General muscle weakness or fatigue
      • Mild depression or anxiety
      • Palpitations (uncomfortable feeling of heart beating)
    • The most common causes are:
      • Short term overwork (long week)
      • Recent illness (tired after fighting off a bug)
      • Short term stress (bad day at the office)
      • Lack of proper food (fasting or skipping meals)

  • Blood Deficiency
    • This is more common in women than men
    • The most common symptoms are:
      • Those listed in Qi Deficiency PLUS...
      • Pale complexion or lack of color in the skin
      • Dizziness
      • Poor memory
      • Numbness or Tingling (especially in the arms or legs)
      • Blurry vision or problems driving at night
      • Insomnia
      • Short or scanty menstrual periods
      • Mild anxiety or depression
      • Dry eyes, skin, or lips
    • The most common causes are:
      • Longer term overwork (long few months)
      • Long term stress (frequently worrying over many months)
      • Lack of proper food (vegan, chronic food allergies, lack of meat or protein)
      • Heavy menstrual periods (longer than 3-4 days or heavy flow)
      • Childbirth

  • Yang Deficiency
    • The most common symptoms are:
      • Those listed in Qi Deficiency PLUS…
      • Feeling cold in general
      • Diarrhea
      • Excessive sweating
      • Weight gain (overtime)
      • Low libido
      • Increased depression
    • The most common causes are:
      • Longer term overwork (long few years)
      • Long term stress (stressful environment over a few years)
      • Too much cold food such as salads, juices, and ice cream without adequate warm foods such as soups, stews, and cooked meats

  • Yin Deficiency
    • The most common symptoms are:
      • Those listed in blood deficiency PLUS…
      • Increased anxiety
      • A feeling of heat in the body (especially in the face)
      • Restlessness
      • Thirst or dry mouth
      • Increased memory loss
      • Increased insomnia
      • Osteoporosis-Osteopenia
      • Dental issues
