Why Call Them Stories?
Remember that when we looked at the affect thoughts have on our energy flow on the thinking/emotional brain page I made the distinction (in the podcast) that the issue isn’t the thoughts themselves but rather the energy we invest in them.
A thought by itself is no more of an “energy drain” than the sound of your computer fan running in the background right now is. It becomes an energy drain not because it’s a thought but rather because you are investing energy into the thought. (podcast below might help this concept become clearer)
A thought pulls energy toward itself when the thought is believed worthy of attention. This process is automatic (until it’s not), meaning to say that you invest energy so quickly, so subconsciously, so automatically that the process happens long before you are consciously aware of it most of the time.
One of the most common causes of a thought being perceived as “worthy of attention” is seeing a thought as a statement of fact, something that is true in all situations and must be believed; rather than seeing it as a pointer towards an experience that might be leveraged in a beneficial way to accomplish a goal or connect with another living being.
We call thoughts “stories” because it highlights a way of relating to thoughts that is more beneficial in healing the Mind and Body.
Let’s try an example:
