“Meditation is not about stopping thoughts, but recognizing that we are more than our thoughts and our feelings.”

I Thought You Had To Sit Cross Legged On A Cushion To Meditate?

When we understand meditation to be the art of letting go of control then you can meditate anytime, anywhere.

Many people (including myself) find sitting quietly like in the picture above to be of great value especially in the beginning to take away some of the distractions of everyday life.

This attempt to control your experience, often is so habitual, and deeply conditioned that it takes a lot of awareness to simply notice yourself doing it. It is so easy to overlook while running errands, making business calls, or playing with the kids. For this reason we can put ourselves in a situation where less attention is required elsewhere so we can be more aware of these subtle demands on our experience.

Anything that allows us to focus more intimately is beneficial. Here are a few pictures of other positions I find helpful in “settling into the moment”. The trick is to find some position that allows you to feel safe and like you have what you need for that moment. Often I would make tea and never drink it, just knowing it was in my hand and available helped me to relax.

Ok Time To Practice!

Go ahead and find your position and get your tea 😛

The only thing to be careful of here is that you want to avoid falling asleep or day-dreaming. For that reason perhaps don’t start with lying in bed with your eyes closed :P!
